Social anxiety or social phobia is an extremely common condition in which the sufferer is afraid of being put 'on the spot'. They fear humiliation, or being made to look stupid, or embarrassing themselves, particularly in work-related, public or social situations (hence social anxiety).
Social anxiety or social phobia consists of many varied symptoms, but the most common include:
Blushing
Lack of confidence
Fear of public speaking
Stuttering or stammering
Shyness
Difficulty using telephones
Being afraid to eat in front of other people
Problems with Agoraphobia or going out
Hot flushes or panic attacks
Performance related e.g. interviews, driving test or sexual performance
Many people that seem confident can in fact suffer from social anxiety when they feel out of control or in a situation where their performance is being judged. Hypnotherapy is very helpful for treating social anxiety, and the symptoms associated with it.
The aim of therapy is never to completely eradicate the fear since a certain amount of fear is usually adaptive since it allows the client to take sensible precautions to avoid danger.
The aim of therapy is more to help the client to manage their fear.
